The art of monodrama appeared in the middle of the last century as a form of modern experimental theatre, which relies on a single actor who narrates the event in a manner of self-dialogue. It is considered a real theater through which we can present large and important topics.
Theatrical actor and director Tammam Al-Awani, in a lecture hosted by the Writers Union branch in Homs, endeavored to bring together the divergent views on the art of monodrama, describing it as an art in its own right, and that it is not for the educated elite, but for the public. Performing arts in which the elements of a lighting technician and stage manager are integrated and all produce a collective creative process.
In the lecture entitled “Reading and Impressions about Monodrama Theatre,” Al-Awani explained that this art depends on one actor, but his emotions are charged with hidden conflict, and the audience must mobilize their feelings to extract and interact with them.
Through his many readings, Al-Awani concluded that the art of monodrama lacks views and accuracy in its study, as there are no real sources or references regarding it and everything related to it is just jurisprudence, citing some opinions of writers and theater directors about it, such as Farhan Bulbul, Amin Abu Bakr, Nihad Saliha and Muhammad Barr Al-Awani.
It is noteworthy that Al-Awani is an actor and director, a member of the Artists Syndicate, a member of the Arab Writers Union, and the Secretary of the Theater Association in the Writers Union.
