The Katholisches Bildungswerk Erding was able to welcome a very special guest to its 10th storytelling café in the Museum Erding: the former head of the kindergarten, Sister Simone, returned to her former place of work for an afternoon to report on her life.

Erding - So all the seats were occupied, and a live broadcast was set up for other visitors in the neighboring kindergarten.

The second main role that afternoon was played by the kindergarten children, who entertained the visitors with their lively songs.

"It's nice that you're here," it said, and spoke from the heart of all visitors who had been looking forward to seeing the unforgotten head of the kindergarten for two years.

The 85-year-old sister Simone also very much regretted the corona-related postponement, but she immediately assured: “I don’t lack the mouth, only the bones are weakening.”

In her lecture, Sister Simone was confidently and charmingly accompanied by KBW employee Carina Dollberger, and old photos were shown on the screen.

The experienced storyteller immediately captivated the audience, and the children in the choir listened intently to what the sister had to say.

The trained kindergarten teacher completed her training in the former GDR.

She came to Erding in 1959, only six weeks earlier she had joined the school sisters in Munich.

At the time, her fellow sister Martinella greeted her with the horrified cry "Oh God, a prize", but she soon felt at home in Bavaria.

"I've always wanted to go abroad," remarked the native of Breslau with a wink.

Nurse Simone became enthusiastic when she thought about the community at that time with her colleagues and also with the kindergarten children.

"We had three groups, each with 60 children," she explained and reported on various activities with the girls and boys.

Before the new kindergarten building was put into operation 50 years ago, the Antonius Kindergarten was located in what is now the Erding Museum.

Here, in the early 1970s, the sisters experienced a devastating hailstorm that smashed all the windows in the house.

Sister Martinella hid in the closet out of fear, but after the storm the two nuns energetically lent a hand.

"We worked all night and hung out all 32 windows in the house, fetched the replacement frames from the attic and hung them all up again," Sister Simone recalls proudly.

She had four bosses in Erding, reported the former kindergarten teacher, who ran the Antonius Kindergarten from 1982 to 2000.

Every meeting with Mayor Hans Schmidmayer started with a shot of "Danziger Goldwasser", she also got on well with Alois Schiessl and Gerd Vogt, and then "Dear Mr. Bauernfeind", Sister Simone said in the direction of Karl-Heinz and Petra Bauernfeind, who followed the lecture with great interest.

During the lengthy debate about the name of the newly built kindergarten, the city fathers learned how stubborn the nun could be.

Sister Simone didn't give up until the military kindergarten was renamed St. Francis and the name St. Antonius was given back to “her” kindergarten at the museum.

“The parents interfered too often”

She also knows the current mayor, Max Gotz, because "he used to sit on my lap," she stated with a wink.

She is often asked how she got into the monastery in the first place.

When she was 13/14 years old, she decided with a friend: "We're going to a monastery." The girlfriend then got married and became a mother of several people, and she herself actually chose the path to a monastery.

"I had a friend at the time, Wilhelm," explained the 85-year-old with a smile.

They had a long-distance relationship, but in the end Wilhelm wanted clear relationships.

"Either we get married now, or you go to your monastery," he said.

Sister Simone chose religious life.

"Always do what you should, not what you like" was her father's motto, which she mostly followed in life, she explained.

As a little girl, Sister Simone was at an airport with her beloved father.

When she saw a red double-decker, she spontaneously said: "Dad, I want to fly." For decades, she dreamed of flying in a red double-decker, which finally came true thanks to a TV crew with show host Rudi Carrell.

The kindergarten director already had TV experience with the children's show "Dingsda", which was often filmed in Erding.

In 1988 she was happy to be persuaded to take part in the show "Let yourself be surprised" with Rudi Carrell.

The surprise was huge when she was led to a red biplane at the airport.

"I almost overlooked that the pilot was the well-known singer Reinhard Mey," admits sister Simone with a laugh.

The flight, of course in a religious robe with aviator goggles, was a dream, she still enthuses today.

The sister has fond memories of the Erding Autumn Festival.

"I wasn't a food connoisseur when it came to beer and wine," she admitted and talked about wonderful evenings with beer, chicken and good company.

"I was deeply rooted in Erding, I've spent half my life here," she stated.

The entertaining stories were interrupted several times by whoops of laughter and spontaneous applause from the enthusiastic listeners.

The musical contributions of the kindergarten choir awakened old kindergarten memories in the elderly speaker as well as in the audience.

There was singing and clapping along, the sister still proved to be extremely sure of the lyrics to the songs that are still current today, and which she obviously enjoyed.

She enjoyed the direct contact with the children, immediately entered into a dialogue and visibly thrived in the familiar environment.

When asked for a tip for the younger kindergarten staff, she explained: "You just have to bring your heart with you".

She always liked the children as much as if they had been her own, assured the elderly woman, who is spending her old age in a nurses' home in Neubiberg.

She revealed that she enjoyed the trip to Erding to the fullest, but to be on the safe side she will stay in her room for a few days for quarantine after her return so that no corona viruses are introduced into the home, explains the still very agile lady.

She gave her telephone number and address to all visitors who did not have the opportunity to talk to her on site.

You look forward to getting in touch.
