The US authorities announced that the bodies of at least 46 illegal immigrants were found in a truck in San Antonio, Texas, near the border with Mexico.
"The ambulance teams transported about 46 dead bodies and 16 wounded, including 12 adults and four children," San Antonio fire chief Charles Hood told AFP, noting that all of them were conscious when they were transferred to receive the necessary health care.
Hood pointed out that the survivors who were taken to hospitals were very hot to the touch and were suffering from heat stroke and heat exhaustion, and no water was found in the truck.
Trucks are a primary means of smuggling migrants from Mexico to the United States, but the journey is often perilous, as these trucks are rarely air-conditioned, and the water bottles the migrants have are often not enough to make the entire journey.
Mexican Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard expressed his regret over this tragedy, noting that the Mexican consul was on his way to San Antonio.
In turn, the Republican Governor of Texas, Greg Abbott, was quick to blame Democratic President Joe Biden for this tragedy, and said: “These dead are Biden’s responsibility, as they are the result of his deadly policy of opening the borders.
Since Biden came to power in early 2021, the number of illegal immigrants infiltrating the United States has increased.
