The forthcoming deliberations of the 30 allies in Madrid are also influenced by the Russian rocket attack on a shopping center in the Ukrainian city of Kremenchuk on Monday.

This is what the two-day NATO summit in Madrid is all about:

Dispute over the northern extension

Until shortly before the summit began, it was unclear how the dispute with Turkey over the admission of Finland and Sweden could be resolved.

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg met with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Finnish President Sauli Niinistö and Swedish Prime Minister Magdalena Andersson in Madrid ahead of the summit.

The deliberations were suspended for a break after three hours in the evening.

According to Finnish media, a document is in the works that addresses Turkey's concerns about terrorism and the issue of arms exports.

Turkey is blocking the admission of Finland and Sweden, which must be decided unanimously.

She argues that both countries support "terrorist organizations" such as the banned Kurdish Workers' Party PKK and the Syrian Kurdish militia YPG - which both countries deny.
