Karin Oechslein sees several problems.

"It's hardest in high schools"

Geretsried – The Women's Union and the School, Education and Sport Working Group (AKS) would have liked to have had a little more audience in the small council chamber recently.

Because the lecture by the education expert Dr.

Karin Oechslein on the subject of "career orientation as part of school development" conveyed some alarming insights, but also constructive solutions.

AKS Chairwoman Susanne Arndt welcomed just five visitors.

Because the speaker was unable to leave her apartment due to an illness in the family, Arndt used her smartphone to create a video transmission.

From 2014 until her retirement in 2020, Oechslein was Director of the State Institute for Schools and Educational Quality in Munich.

The doctorate in German and Romance studies gained her expertise before, among other things, as a headmistress at the Oberhaching high school and as a ministerial representative for high schools in Upper Bavaria-West.

Vocational orientation at middle and secondary schools is good - but: "There's a problem in grammar schools"

"Not everyone has to study," said Oechslein.

While she expressly praised the accompanying offers for careers orientation at middle and secondary schools, she noted weaknesses at other educational institutions.

"It's most difficult in grammar schools," stated the speaker.

In contrast to high school and junior high school students, who usually leave school with specific career aspirations, many high school graduates want to “find themselves” after graduating.

Wasted time, thinks Oechslein.

Because early and systematic careers orientation in schools could minimize the constantly growing shortage of skilled workers in many sectors.

"For this, the dialogue between school and the world of work would have to be promoted," concluded the education expert.

There are many programs from the Federal Employment Agency, but these are still not being used enough by the responsible high school heads.

For example, worksheets, questionnaires and checklists can be conveniently accessed on the Internet.

Many study and training dropouts - professional orientation could help

According to Oechslein, thanks to this preparation, the number of trainees and university dropouts could also be significantly reduced.

At the end of her presentation, the speaker called for the development of quality management for career and study orientation as a "constitutive part of the school profile".
