The caterpillars of butterflies are pests in the bed.

They will eat anything in search of food.

But there are tricks to keeping them away.

Hamburg – For many garden lovers, there is nothing nicer in summer than relaxing in the green at home.

But even now the garden needs a lot of care.

The lawn must be mowed, plants regularly watered and fertilized.

However, many types of fruit and vegetables that were sown in spring can now be harvested for the first time.

They can be used to conjure up delicious summer salads, dips or side dishes for the barbecue if someone else doesn't come first.

After all, there are enough blackheads in the garden who are after your lush bed.

These include many pests such as grubs, snails, but also caterpillars.

The latter attack the plants in search of food, eat holes in them and are often found on leaves or the backs of them.

Few want to tackle them with chemical agents and patiently collect the larvae of the butterflies to take them to a meadow far away.

But there are other ways to get rid of the voracious pests.

Caterpillars in the garden: 1. Open the fly screen

To prevent caterpillars from nibbling at your plants, you can simply place an insect screen around your bed.

To do this, take a commercial fly screen and pull it around the endangered types of fruit and vegetables.

At the same time, the fabric is permeable enough so that plants can still get light, oxygen or rain.

This also prevents other animals such as moths from feasting on your harvest or even laying eggs in the soil.

Caterpillars in the garden: 2. Attract beneficial insects

Caterpillars also have natural enemies.

Anyone who manages to lure them into their own bed has less work to do.

Some beneficial insects also have the advantage that they also pollinate plants when they drop by your bed.

These include flying bees in particular, which put the caterpillars under constant stress.

It is therefore only an advantage to have particularly bee-friendly plants in the local greenery and to plant them in a targeted manner near the bed.

Caterpillars in the garden: 3. Plant herbs

There are plants that butterfly caterpillars don't like at all.

It is therefore advisable to also grow these in the bed.

These ensure that the voracious pests stay away.

These include many herbs, whose scent naturally deters caterpillars due to the essential oils they contain.

Below:

  • thyme

  • oregano

  • lavender

  • sage

  • rosemary

Caterpillars in the garden: 4. Keep chickens in the garden

Keeping chickens in your own garden has been booming since the corona crisis.

It does mean a lot of work and care, but it is an important first step towards self-sufficiency.

In addition, chickens in their own garden have another advantage: they prefer to eat beetles, larvae and caterpillars.

Chickens love being able to roam freely in the garden and chasing the little animals.

Other garden animals such as hedgehogs also love to eat the pests and can be lured into the local greenery.

For this, however, you need small shelters made of foliage or undergrowth to be able to hide.

Caterpillars in the garden: 5. Spray neem oil

Instead of planting herbs in the bed, you can simply use a homemade spray that the caterpillars can't smell good at all.

To do this, take eight tablespoons of neem oil and mix it with four liters of water at room temperature.

Put the natural pesticide in a spray bottle.

According to the "Norddeutscher Rundfunk" (NDR), if you spray the neem oil directly onto the leaves, it helps against acute pest infestation.
