Union faction leader Friedrich Merz has warned the federal government against new social benefits and called for an overall concept for the crisis.

'She wants everything at the same time and runs up more and more debt to do so.

We are now entering a time when there is no alternative but to set new priorities.

And the real priority should be our freedom, our security, and everything else should be secondary," said the CDU chairman in the ZDF "Morgenmagazin" with a view to the aggravated security situation as a result of the Russian attack on Ukraine.

Merz warns of new challenges in the second half of the year

Merz named his own demands as follows: “No new performance promises.

On the tax side, make the relief that benefits everyone, all taxpayers and not just all employees, as we now see it with the tank discount and now obviously with this one-off payment.« He was referring to the idea of Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD ), that the employers give the employees a tax-free one-time payment and in return the trade unions accept lower wage increases in collective bargaining rounds.

The unions are also opposed to Scholz's proposal.

"One-off payments don't get us anywhere," said Ver.di boss Frank Werneke on the "Radiowelt" program on Bayern 2. "We need an overall concept to meet the challenges that we will face in the second half of the year.

And first of all, one would have to say that one does not constantly plan further expenditure, especially in the area for which the Federal Minister of Social Affairs is responsible.

But the Federal Chancellor obviously has neither the will nor the strength to do so.«

In May, the German inflation rate reached 7.9 percent, its highest level since the winter of 1973/1974.

According to economists, the end of the development should not yet have been reached - especially not if Russian gas deliveries should fail permanently.

So far, the government has primarily tried to cushion the burden on citizens with individual measures such as the nine-euro ticket, fuel discounts or the heating cost subsidy.
