Nine cows fell below the Benediktenwand.

Something must have terrified her.

There is currently no evidence of a wolf.

Jachenau – The incident has been on everyone's lips in the past few days in the Isarwinkel.

Research by the Tölzer Kurier has now confirmed that nine cows apparently panicked and crashed in the Jachenau area last Wednesday.

Six animals died, three survived.

So far, no one can answer the question of how the animals ran away and ran into misfortune.

Jachenau: Cows fell 200 meters down

One of those involved in the salvage operation described what happened to the Tölzer Kurier on Monday.

As a result, the animals, which belong to a farmer from the district, were kept as livestock near the Scharnitzalm below the Benediktenwand, in the direction of the Schwarzenbach Gorge.

On Wednesday, the herdsman noticed the animals were missing.

An electric fence that separated the alpine meadow from a steep slope had been completely torn down over a length of about 80 meters.

A group of helpers went in search.

They discovered five animals in rough terrain, into which they had fallen 200 meters over a rock.

Four cows were already dead.

One had to be killed immediately because of her serious injuries – open fractures.

Three other animals had slid down a steep slope into also impassable, wooded terrain.

The helpers first had to cut their way through dead wood and windthrow to get to them.

Of these animals, two had "significant injuries," while one "didn't make a bad impression."

But all three of them could have walked and were led down the Schwarzenbachtal.

An animal was still missing at that time, but was probably found the next day, according to the knowledge of the helper.

Panic reaction to an external stimulus

At the request of the Tölzer Kurier, district office spokeswoman Marlis Peischer also provided information on the case on behalf of the veterinary office: Nine animals crashed, six of them died.

These were recovered by helicopter and taken to the animal carcass disposal facility.

Incidentally, according to Peischer, the pet owner does not have to pay for this transport.

The district, the Free State and the animal disease fund share the costs.

Three animals were housed alive in the owner's stable and given veterinary care.

The nine cows broke through an electric fence, Peischer continued.

They were later found "relatively widely scattered".

From the point of view of the district office, this speaks for "a major panic reaction due to some external stimulus".

There is much speculation and rumor as to what might have caused the cows to flee in panic.

Did a wolf scare the animals?

The veterinary office makes it clear that "there are no signs of feeding".

"In addition, no prey circle of a wolf in the vicinity of the crash site is known," says Peischer.

One can only speculate about the reason for the panic among the cows

District farmer Ursula Fiechtner does not want to rule out this possibility.

Of course, she too can only speculate.

There are many possibilities: in addition to a wolf, a dog could also have triggered the panic reaction - "the cattle certainly don't make a difference," she says.

Noises from the air could also frighten the animals, and there are currently more helicopters in the region because of the G7 summit.

Jachenau: Cows break through pasture fence and fall to their deaths

The pressure of tourism can also increasingly disturb the peace and quiet on the alpine pastures these days.

"Hikers with headlamps, for example, can startle the animals."

For the district farmer, the only thing that is certain is that it cannot simply have been her desire for freedom that made the animals run away.

"Then they would not have jumped down a rock in a hurry, but would have settled down in a safe place," explains Ursula Fiechtner.
