Moldova's Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Integration Nikolai Popescu considered that his country's obtaining the status of a candidate for European Union membership does not mean its accession to Western sanctions against Russia.
“The recommendations of the European Commission on our reform process are clear and joining the sanctions is not among the signals and requests of the Commission, pointing out that this issue is constantly discussed by Chisinau and Brussels,” RIA Novosti quoted Popescu as saying yesterday in an interview with Pro TV.
This statement contradicts the announcement by Moldovan Parliament Speaker Igor Grosso that his country's government is ready to join European sanctions as a sign of solidarity with the European Union. The neutral status of the republic and the pragmatic and mutually beneficial partnership with Russia.
