A number of localities in the south claim incompetence on the part of the state regarding the environment and complain about air pollution in their area as a result of waste incineration in Judea and Samaria.

This week, the Lachish communities and the Ashkelon Cities Association petitioned the High Court against the government, claiming that they are exposed to health hazards as a result of chemicals emitted during infections in Judea and Samaria.

The petition, filed through attorneys Dr. Tzipi Isser-Itzik and Tal Granot of Lipa Meir & Co., states that for more than a decade, electronic waste has been illegally burned in the area, in a way that directly affects the quality of life and health of Lachish residents. , Which are located near the source of the fires, from the side inside Israel.

The fires lead to serious odor and air pollution hazards suffered by the residents, who are forced to lock themselves in their homes and seal them, in order to protect their health.

The source of e-waste, most of it, is in Israeli territory, when tons of electrical products and electronic equipment are collected and transported in violation of the law to Area C and the Palestinian Authority (A and B).

There, they are dismantled and illegally treated by fire, for the purpose of generating a monetary profit from the metals in the electronic waste and selling them back into Israel.

Petitioners claim that "the treatment of waste which is done through such prohibited combustion, leads to the emission of toxic substances to the environment, such as arsenic, lead, cadmium and flame retardants, in a way that creates soil pollution, air pollution, water pollution and ozone damage, along with exposure to odor nuisances and health hazards."

According to the complaints of the petitioners' residents, which have lasted for over a decade, there is a clear increase in morbidity, allergies and other respiratory problems among the children of the area.

Regarding the question of responsibility, the petition states that "Those who are entrusted with supervising and enforcing the chain of illegal actions (from collecting from the treatment facilities, through transporting waste across the Green Line through the crossings, burning it in Judea and Samaria and returning the treated metals to Israel" "Security legislation and international law, when all ministries are entrusted with protecting residents from the formation of environmental-health hazards and their consequences."
