On an area of 30 dunums in the village of Darbul in the Jabal al-Sheikh area in the countryside of Damascus, mulberry trees are spread out, which the people are waiting to pick in a social atmosphere full of work, cooperation and familiarity, as production forecasts in the region for this season indicate about 180 tons.
The people are keen to be in the field from the early morning hours until the evening without feeling bored, as it is among the most important crops for them and brings them good economic value.
The town’s farmers, scattered among the tree branches, whose hands were mixed with the color of berries, expressed to SANA’s reporter their happiness with the harvest season. Muhammad Ali Al-Asrawi said while carefully picking the berries: “This tree is what makes our dreams.” Expand the cultivated area.
The young farmer Omar Harb describes the mulberry tree as giving, indicating that during the harvest season, families gather from the early morning in the fields with their children who race to carry the boxes in which the berries are placed, explaining that the value of the crop is a main income on which the people of the region depend. The boxes filled with berries and their distribution indicate that the people of the village are eagerly waiting for the season, unlike all seasons.
The head of the agricultural association in the village of Darbul Jamal Muhammad Al-Asrawi pointed out that the total area of fruitful trees in the village is 1,870 dunums for irrigation and 2,800 dunams are planted with rainfed and silage, of which 30 dunums are planted with Shami berries, which is one of the most important crops in Derbel because it is less expensive than any other crop that does not need spraying Insecticide and frequent watering, pointing to its suitable prices for the farmer and its good returns.
Al-Asrawi indicated that the production of Drabl this season is estimated at 180 tons, which is marketed in Damascus. In addition, the people are keen to manufacture about 500 packages of raspberry syrup in the season, all of which are marketed, pointing out that Drbel includes, in addition to berries, about 5 thousand fig trees and produces about 200 tons per season and 10 Thousands of olive trees annually produce about 250 tons of olive oil, in addition to 70 dunums of apples, whose production reaches about 70 tons per season. There are 7,000 cherry trees, the annual production of which is 180 tons, and there are apricots, peaches, jaranches and walnuts, while the association provides farmers with fertilizers and diesel according to availability.
