(CNN Spanish) -

Saúl "Canelo" Álvarez will face Kazakh Gennady Golovkin again on September 17 in Las Vegas, Nevada, which would be the final fight between the two boxers.

The Mexican boxer spoke with Elizabeth Pérez in the prelude to the evening to be held.

Canelo Álvarez says that he would have preferred not to fight "GGG", whom he beat in 2018 after drawing in his first confrontation.

What led you to accept the fight now?

This he answered.

Elizabeth Pérez: We are less than three months away from the highly anticipated third fight with Gennady Golovkin, something that boxing fans have been waiting for.

Why do it now?

What was it that convinced you?

Saúl "Canelo" Álvarez:

The truth is that I was already doing other things, which was fighting against the best.

Fighting with other fighters.

And I didn't mean for this fight, but people wanted it.

He was talking about it a lot.

DAZN loved her.

So we did this two-fight-a-year deal and within that was the Golovkin fight and that's why we're here.

There has always been a strong rivalry between the two of you, between you and Gennady Golovkin.

But do you think it has intensified over the years?

Canelo: All these years he has talked a lot about me, he has disrespected me too much.

Before, it made me angry, obviously, but there was nothing, there was no fight.

And today that I have the opportunity to be a few months away from being able to hit him like he has never been hit in his life... I think there is a very, very big rivalry.

And it's been four years since that last fight in which you beat him by split decision, which was a better result than the first one, which was a draw.

But how much have you changed as a boxer and as a person in those four years in which you have not fought?

Canelo: I have matured a lot as a fighter, I have matured a lot.

I am a stronger fighter, consolidated in my weight.

I think I've come a long way.

So you will see him in the fight on September 17 and I think that's where it shows, because right now I can say so many things, but at the end of the day the fight is the one where it will show.

And have you learned anything from those fights that might allow you to identify where Golovkin might be lacking in the ring from those previous two fights?

Canelo: Yeah, sure, we already know each other as much as he knows me, as much as I know him.

So we know how to fight him and we know how to beat him.

Golovkin is going to move up in weight to face you in this match.

What do you plan to show Golovkin in this category that he may not have seen before?

Canelo: It's the same thing that happened when I fought him.

I also upgraded to fight him.

A category.

So it's up to him this time and it's up to him to feel what I felt the first time I gained weight.

Do you consider that GGG is the greatest rival of your career?

Canelo: Well, the rivalry, yes.

Is it the most difficult?

Canelo: Maybe not the most difficult.

I think it was Floyd Mayweather.

He is a very complicated fighter.

I think he has been the most difficult.

But Golovkin, one of the strongest that has touched me in my career, yes, too.

What adjustments have you made in these months in terms of your training in your diet for this fight?

Canelo: Try to take care of myself as much as possible.

And train.

Obviously.

I always like to train at 100%, taking care of myself, doing things well and the only thing I have to do is make everything respond as it should and train at 100%.

You've said you want to take Golovkin into retirement and on the fast track, but whatever happens in the ring in September, do you think this is going to be the last matchup we're going to see between the two of them?

Canelo: God willing, yes, it will be the last.

We were talking about your change in weight and you moved up in weight to face Bivol this year, it was a loss in your career, the second.

What have you learned from two defeats in an impressive career and a virtually unblemished record?

You learn a lot from defeats, from victories and obviously you learn a lot from both, from defeats and from victories.

From the defeat I learned many things that have to be done or that have to be changed in my routine.

Not just as a fighter, but in life as well.

So you learn too much.

We know that boxing, like any high performance sport, is closely linked to discipline, to concentration.

But beyond talent, how much can it affect the body or the mind?

What is the hardest?

Canelo: Everything affects you if you are not mentally well.

If you are physically 100% okay, but your mind is not okay, it's practically the same.

So you have to have a very strong mentality and be physically well prepared.

Has there been a time when you felt like throwing in the towel, not being able to continue?

And if so, what has given you the strength to continue?

Canelo: No, never, I have never felt the need to want to throw in the towel, far from it.

Thank God I have always been a very strong person, who always goes forward and looking for the best, no matter what is happening.

We talked earlier about your passion for golf, a sport to which you have said that you would even like to dedicate yourself 100% once you retire.

But seeing now the current situation on the circuit, as many golfers are moving to the Arab circuit, what do you think of this?

What do you think about what is happening?

Canelo: Well, look, I am one of those who can say the least, because at the end of the day they can do what is best for their career.

Personally, if it suits me in my career to do something like what they are doing, then I would do it.

At the end of the day, it is what is best for them and if they believe that it is the best for their career, well, I think that everyone has... to make the decision they want.

And, in your opinion, has boxing been affected by this trend that we have seen recently of retired boxers, coming back from retirement, fighting youtubers and so on?

Canelo: It's hard to say why they do it or not, but at the end of the day it's their life.

It does not cause me any discomfort or it generates something that affects me in what boxing is.

Everyone can do what they want.

We live in a moment of a very unfortunate tragedy with the death of dozens of immigrants in Texas who were found in a truck.

We know that this story is not the first time it has happened.

We know that it is a story that repeats itself, that unfortunately it will continue to repeat itself.

But there are also success stories of immigrants arriving and succeeding in the United States.

What is your message for these families who are currently going through this very difficult situation and who perhaps intend to come to this country looking for a better life?

Canelo: Well look, the truth is that I'm finding out right now, at this moment what you're telling me.

The truth is that it's always sad, isn't it?

And maybe there are also many more that we don't know about, that don't appear in the news.

I think this is sad, but in the end, emigrating like that is very difficult, it's complicated.

You risk your whole life... a lot, but at the end of the day, everyone looks for her dream in a different way, right?

And just say that I am with all the families who lost their relatives there in this search for the American dream, as they say.

He told me that the defeat with Floyd Mayweather was the hardest for you.

How do you get over those disappointments?

How is progress?

Canelo: Strong mentality and keep going.

I have always said that when you are looking for greatness on that path there are many stumbling blocks, there are many barriers that are going to stop you.

It is not easy, because on the path of mediocrity, well, there is no barrier, no pothole.

That's why you're going straight, not non-stop.

In search of greatness there will always be potholes and things that want to stop you, but in the end you can fall once, twice, three times, ten.

But that does not mean that you will not achieve it: keep going, get up and continue, keep fighting for the dream you want.

Looking at your Instagram page, one of the

reels

that attracts the most attention or that seems particularly beautiful to me, is the one you have with your daughter, with María Fernanda, accompanying you to the press conferences, showing that innocence that the children and seeing her father, I suppose proud, but does your daughter, who is so tiny, understand what you do for a living?

Canelo: Yeah, he gets it, perfect.

She is a very intelligent girl.

She is a girl who is four years old but she is too intelligent, that she understands everything, everything as it should be and she understands what she does for a living.

She is proud of her dad.

And is he aware of the risks you face every time you step into a ring?

Cinnamon: Yeah, sure.

She knows and suddenly cries because she gets scared.

She knows the risk her dad is running.

But at the end of the day I always tell him that this is my job and that this is what I have to do.
