Gillien Maxwell convicted of trafficking in women, conspiracy to solicit and transporting a minor for the purpose of illegal sexual exploitation • She faces a maximum sentence of 30 years behind bars

A court in his country, Tahavit, is expected to sentence Gileen Maxwell today (Tuesday).

The fate of the woman, who sided with millionaire Jeffrey Epstein, in what the prosecution described as collaborating to solicit minors' prostitution will be determined in the coming hours after two years of legal battle and she could face up to 30 years in prison.

The counts against Maxwell (60) include: trafficking in women, conspiracy and transportation of a minor for the purpose of illegal sexual exploitation.

According to the sentence, Maxwell can spend the rest of her life in a federal prison despite opposition from the defense, which seeks to drastically reduce the prison term to four to five years.

Maxwell, who has British citizenship, became the main and only defendant in the trial whose main character was supposed to be a life partner, tycoon Jeffrey Epstein, the man who was linked to all high society in the US including former presidents and a number of senior figures around the world, including royalty and prime minister Former Israeli.

However, the millionaire was arrested in July 2019 and a month later committed suicide in his cell, in a mysterious death which drew much criticism and was fertile ground for various conspiracies.

Maxwell's lawyers who tried to take advantage of Epstein's death and built a strategy centered on separating her from any activity that the company was accused of and thus trying to escape the threat of justice.

"Epstein was the mastermind, Epstein was the main abuser and Epstein organized the crimes to his personal satisfaction," they argued.

She was later also marked as a victim: "There will be no trial for Epstein and there will be no justice and public justice for his accusers," the lawyers wrote.

"The U.S. government now had a huge hole to fill: Epstein's empty chair."

But the prosecution rejected the allegations which they defined as ridiculous.

"Maxwell's claims that she is responsible for Epstein's crimes are absurd and offensive. Instead of showing even the slightest hint of responsibility, the defendant makes a desperate attempt to place the blame wherever else she can," he reasoned.

At the center of the trial were 24 witnesses and four accusers, including two who were minors at the time the crimes were attributed.

In December last year the court found Maxwell guilty on five of six counts.

In recent days and in the run-up to the final sentence, it has been reported that the prison authorities have transferred Epstein's partner to a special ward in the prison designated for suicide supervision, in the face of fears that she could end her life.
