Weather: why seasonal normals will go up a notch

Météo France is changing its reference data. From this Tuesday, June 28, we will compare temperatures and rainfall over the period


During the episode of early heat wave that we experienced in mid-June, we mentioned temperatures sometimes 10°C higher than normal for the season.

But as of this Tuesday, the baseline data changes (a bit).

Why ?

“Because we are switching to a new reference system, answers Matthieu Sorel, climatologist at Météo France.

Until now, Météo France compared temperatures but also precipitation and wind patterns with averages taken between 1981 and 2010. From now on, we will compare to the period 1991-2020.
