The general renovation of the Ammer School (here a picture of the construction site from 2017) was completed less than two years ago.

Now there is again a need for expansion.

The general renovation was barely two years ago.

But Weilheim's primary school on the Ammer could soon be a construction site again.

Reason: The rooms for the lunchtime care are no longer sufficient.

Weilheim

– The lunchtime care at the Weilheim Ammer School, whose new building opened in autumn 2018, is “bursting at the seams”.

The deputy master builder Michael Schleich delivered this message to the main committee of the city council last week.

The school management and the provider of the lunchtime care, the Oberland children's aid, informed the city administration that the capacity limit of around 100 places had already been reached.

In addition, consideration is being given to converting the lunchtime care into an open all-day school (OGTS).

This means "that the already scarce premises are no longer sufficient" and that an expansion is urgently needed - also with a view to the legal entitlement to all-day care starting in 2026.

After a year and a half, the school is already too small

What exactly the primary school, which has around 300 pupils, needs for this, is now to be clarified as part of a so-called "planning phase 0", as it was at the Hardtschule some time ago (we reported).

Although no funds are earmarked for this in the 2022 city budget, there are still funds available for planning at the Hardtschule.

According to the unanimous decision of the main committee, 29,000 euros of this will now be transferred to the budget office of the Ammerschule - for the implementation of "Phase 0", in which everyone involved will be brought to the table.

This rebooking was “totally unspectacular in terms of budget,” said city treasurer Christoph Scharf at the meeting.

With regard to the consequences, however, he was "a bit worried": The Ammer School had just been completely renovated, says Scharf, "it was only completed a year and a half or two and now it is already too small".

And the consequential costs, which cannot yet be estimated, worry the chamberlain;

after all, during the "planning phase 0" of the Hardtschule "an expansion project came out, for which we now have 13 million euros in the financial planning," said Scharf to the local newspaper.

No funds have been budgeted for an expansion of the Ammer School.

That will (have to) change soon.

As stated in the documents for the main committee meeting, "budget funds for the year 2023 have already been requested in order to complete phase 0 and the planning for an interim building at the beginning of 2023 and to realize an interim building at the Ammerschule in 2023 if possible".

And that won't be enough in the long term when it comes to elementary schools in Weilheim.

With the targeted population growth of 0.5 percent per year, Weilheim "will not be able to avoid a third primary school," said Petra Arneth-Mangano (SPD) in the main committee: "What about it?" Karl-Heinz Grehl (Greens) added that the city must "urgently start" with the considerations on this, especially with regard to the possible location.

2. Mayor Angelika Flock (CSU), chairing the meeting, explained that "a lot has already been thought about" in the town hall.
