49 prisoners killed during riots in Colombia

At least 49 prisoners were killed during a riot inside a prison in southwestern Colombia.

"So far, there are 49 dead, and this is a preliminary report," said the head of the country's prison service, General Tito Castellanos, noting that about 30 prisoners were also injured during the riots that broke out at night in the prison in Tolo.

The Colombian official did not give additional details about the circumstances of the riots, which resulted in this large number of deaths.

Colombia confirmed earlier that it would release thousands of prisoners amid the outbreak of the Corona virus two years ago, after inmates rioted against overcrowding and lack of services.
