A Jew, a mother of five and a supporter of Israel: a new appointment at the top of French politics
.
Yael Brown Pivet, was elected last night (Tuesday) to serve as President of the new Parliament of France, the fourth most important position.
This is the first time a woman has chaired parliament since the founding of the Fifth Republic of France in 1958.
Brown, 51, has held a number of positions in the French parliament in recent years, including groundbreaking positions for women, including the Minister for Civil Affairs outside France.
Brown left the government last Sunday and was elected president of the National Assembly yesterday.
Brown attended the Akiva Jewish School in Strasbourg.
Several times she received antisemitic insults and threats due to her background.
Yesterday in a speech she gave after her election, she said that her family came to France to escape the Nazis in the 1930s.
The new president visited Israel several times and, among other things, was a member of the France-Israel friendship group at the meeting from 2017 to 2022.
