Air traffic over large parts of Germany was restricted on Wednesday.

The reason was technical problems with German air traffic control.

: German airspace was temporarily restricted over large parts on Wednesday (June 29).

  • Computer breakdown Reason for disturbances: Consequences for important airports such as Dusseldorf, Cologne and Frankfurt.

Update from June 29, 9:52 a.m

.: The software glitch at German air traffic control has been fixed since 9 a.m.

But there are further delays and cancellations at German airports, and the hub at Frankfurt Airport is particularly affected.

The consequences can also be felt beyond the borders of Germany, also in Europe.

Frankfurt Airport tweeted: "Due to technical difficulties at German air traffic control in Langen, disruptions will continue to occur throughout European airspace.

As a result, there will continue to be operational delays and flight cancellations in FRA.”

Air passengers are asked to check the status of their flight before making their way to the airport.

Travelers should plan extra time and check in for their flight as early as possible.

Frankfurt Airport informed about the restrictions on flight operations at 7 a.m. on Wednesday morning.

Apparently there were problems with German air traffic control for more than two hours.

The incident is reminiscent of the mega breakdown at the Swiss air traffic control Skyguide.

The Swiss airspace was closed for hours - no overflight was possible.

According to a Skyguide spokesman, a hardware component no longer worked properly.

Update from June 29, 8:26 a.m .:

Technical problems at the German Air Traffic Control (DFS) temporarily restricted air traffic over large parts of Germany early on Wednesday morning.

The fault was rectified in the morning, and normal operations should be possible again from 9 a.m.

That said a spokeswoman for the federal institution.

The reason for the disruption since the early hours of the morning was a software problem in the Langen control center when installing an update.

In the meantime, it was therefore only possible to fly to a limited extent.

Center Langen controls the lower airspace in central Germany with important airports such as

Düsseldorf

,

Cologne

and

Frankfurt

.

The area extends from Kassel to Lake Constance and from the French border to Thuringia.

Overflights are not affected because they are monitored by controllers in the Center Karlsruhe.
