For the places Treffen and Arriach, the police called out the civil defense alarm.
An 82-year-old was swept away by a stream and found dead.
Another missing person is being sought.
Authorities urged residents to stay safe on the first floor of their homes.
Several people trapped by the flood were rescued by helicopter.
The natural disaster hit the village of Arriach, with its 1,400 inhabitants, particularly hard: all connecting roads were washed away,
so that the residents are cut off from the outside world.
The federal army, the Austrian army, supports the fire brigade and rescue workers at work.
