It is one of the most dramatic human smuggling incidents in recent history: US authorities found dozens of dead migrants in this truck near the Texan city of San Antonio.

In addition, a few more later died in hospital, the total number of fatalities is 51, and numerous people were also treated.

Many had suffered a heat stroke, in San Antonio it was about 40 degrees on Monday, there was no water in the truck - and no visible working air conditioning, the authorities said.

First Scene Rehab is a volunteer organization that got there early.

Even for the chairman, the stakes were exceptionally bad.

Robert Briggs, Chair of First Scene Rehab:

It was one of those things that... It's just really upsetting.

No no.

I've never seen anything like it in all the years I've been doing it.«

And his employees were also very affected by the incident.

Robert Briggs, Chairman of First Scene Rehab:

“You looked distressed.

Such a scene does something to our first responders when they are directly involved.

And that can be seen in their eyes, how shaken they all look.”

The smugglers simply parked the truck on the street.

Three men have been arrested so far and investigations are still ongoing.

According to the Reuters news agency, the number of border crossings by migrants in the region is currently at record levels.

The AP news agency reports that in May alone, almost 240,000 migrants were stopped on their way to the United States.

Compared to last year, this is an increase of about a third.

Migrants in Mexico who still want to make the dangerous journey to the United States and helpers are angry about the incident.

Javier Cavlillo, director of the Casa del Migrante shelter:

"These are the consequences of closing the borders, of programs like Title 42, MPP, Remain in Mexico - these political agreements between Mexico and the USA.

These programs force migrants to look for more dangerous routes.”

The news is provoking mixed reactions among people in Mexico hoping for a possible route to the United States.

Fabiola Rodriguez, migrant from Honduras:

»To be honest, when I heard about it, I wanted to go back, cancel my trip.

I already asked for help to get ID documents.

But I was told that I would have to go to Monterrey for that.«

Migrant:

»We don't want to be here anymore, it doesn't matter, I'm not afraid of death.

I want a future for my children like everyone here.«

Meanwhile, the identification of the victims continues.

Many of them had fake, stolen or no identification papers with them at all.

This makes the search much more complicated.
