In the era of information technology, cyber security has not only become a topic of concern to all walks of life, but also involves risks and threats at the level of individuals, businesses and society.

According to police data, the number of cybercrime cases has quadrupled in 10 years, and the amount of losses has risen sharply from more than 20 million to 3 billion yuan; the global demand for cybersecurity talents has risen from 1 million in 2013 to 3.5 to 4.2 million in 2021 The number of visits increased by as much as 350%, revealing that the technology industry is facing a talent shortage.

The new generation of young people who have been exposed to the online world for a long time will inevitably fall into the traps of the Internet. To learn how to defend themselves in the virtual world, the knowledge of network security is very important.

In response to the society's demand for talents, HKCT will launch a new Higher Diploma in Cyber Security (Testing and Compliance) in September, nurturing Secondary 6 graduates who are interested in joining the cyber security and information technology fields to become a new generation of cyber security professionals.

With the development and popularization of network applications and intelligent technologies, network security issues are increasing day by day.

Network security involves a wide range of industries, mainly for enterprises to inspect potential threats and vulnerabilities, with early warning functions, and at the same time maintain and protect the security of the network environment.

Dr. Lin Sen, Associate Vice-Chancellor of HKCT, pointed out that network security has developed from the early defense against viruses to different fields, affecting individuals, enterprises and society, and then driving all walks of life, including education, finance and banking, disciplined forces, telecommunications The industry needs a large number of network security professionals, and the development space is unlimited.

"Take big data as an example, now all walks of life have begun to apply big data, and the data security issues involved have naturally become a major development trend of network security. In addition to network intrusion, cloud computing security, Internet of Things and identity security issues They are all new areas of development that can be hot.” Cyber security and the public are inseparable. Dr. Lin Sen believes that although Hong Kong people have cyber security awareness, they still lack the ability to execute. Troubled ideas make it difficult to improve the level of network security, and schools, the government and society need to promote and educate together to create an atmosphere for maintaining network security.”

Dr. Lin Sen, Associate Vice-Chancellor of HKCT, pointed out that the cyber security industry needs a large number of professional talents and has room for development.

Regarding the current talent shortage in the global technology industry, especially the demand for cybersecurity talents, Dr. Lin Sen said that there is a lack of talents in the IT industry in Hong Kong, and there are very few professionals engaged in cybersecurity.

"The industry reports that at present, cybersecurity talents are mainly recruited by poaching, resulting in very high human resource costs. With the implementation of cybersecurity policies in the future, cybersecurity will be regulated by laws and industry regulations to ensure that companies operate in compliance."

HKCT receives support from Education Bureau to launch cyber security course

In response to the needs of the industry, HKCT will launch a new Higher Diploma in Cyber Security (Testing and Compliance) in September. The course adheres to HKCT's professional education philosophy and trains talents with professional knowledge and ethics for the industry, covering website development. Technology, information security management system, network security experiment, digital authentication, etc., it is expected to admit 40 people in the first year.

HKCT will launch a new Higher Diploma in Cyber Security (Detection and Compliance) in September to train students who aspire to join the cyber security and information technology fields to become a new generation of cyber security professionals.

Earlier, HKCT was successfully awarded the first round of Self-financing Post-secondary Education Enhancement and Start-up Grant Scheme (ESGS) by the Education Bureau with a grant of $20 million to develop cybersecurity courses, establish a cybersecurity operation center and cyber range and training center.

"The HKCT refers to the national system design, and has established an electronic shooting range to conduct network security-related professional learning, research, security testing, competitions, and actual combat drills, etc. Functionally, it not only supports cloud computing systems, but also applies the latest parallel simulation technology. Set up a virtual environment according to your needs. Make use of the networking of virtual equipment and real equipment to simulate the actual cyberspace environment, allowing students to conduct experiments and training, such as network attack and defense, website intrusion and maintenance, etc. The shooting ranges at home and abroad are interconnected and accumulated experience for students.”

HKCT offers a higher diploma course in cyber security, and builds a professional cyber security operation center, cyber range and training center.

Through the screen to understand the operation of the online world, it will not only bring a new learning experience to students, but also make learning more handy.

In addition to equipment, HKCT has close ties with mainland universities and the industry. Earlier, it signed a co-construction agreement with the School of Cyberspace Security of Zhejiang University to jointly cultivate talents and exchange, and carry out various cooperation such as scientific research exchanges.

The course is also supported by technology companies in Hong Kong and the Mainland, such as China Unicom International, Beijing Tianrongxin Technology Co., Ltd., Alibaba Cloud, etc., to provide students with opportunities for exchange, training, internships and employment development, and to cultivate professionals who master theories and practical applications.
