The corona numbers have recently increased again in Franconia.

Do the new infections come from the Rock-im-Park Festival or the Erlangen Bergkirchweih?

Erlangen/Nuremberg – Dancing between thousands of people on the beer bench at the Bergkirchweih in Erlangen, partying all night long with many like-minded people at Rock im Park in Nuremberg: After the two major open-air events, the term “superspreader event” suddenly found its way into the middle of Franconia made the rounds in the summer.

Pandemic experts, for example from the Bavarian State Office for Health and Food Safety (LGL), have so far been unable to prove a direct connection between the folk festival, festival and a sudden increase in the number of corona cases in the region based on the numbers.

An increase in corona numbers can hardly be attributed to an event

The assignment of case numbers to a specific event is not easily possible, says Martina Junk from the LGL on request.

“This is particularly due to the fact that people who have tested positive and are interviewed by the health authorities cannot always name the location of the infection.” The health authorities are then not able to determine exact chains of infection.

In Nuremberg, too, no "Rock-im-Park" effect can obviously be read from the figures.

After the festival weekend, the incidence in the Franconian metropolis only followed the increase observed throughout Bavaria.

According to Birgit Broghammer, the city of Nuremberg's health department has not detected any further increase in Rock-im-Park.

Also around the spring folk festival no "Kirchweih effect" could have been observed in Nuremberg.

Large crowds of people inevitably lead to increasing numbers of infections

Even for laypeople, on the other hand, it should be obvious that the risk of infection at a mass event with many people in a small space is higher than being infected on the sofa at home in your own four walls.

Of course, this truism is also confirmed by the experts from the responsible state office in Erlangen.

The probability that the corona virus will spread more in crowds is higher than in the case of contact restrictions and avoidance of crowds.

However, the experts have another explanation for the recent increase in the number of infections.

"As far as the current increase in the number of cases is concerned, this is likely to be largely due to the increasing spread of the BA.5 variant," said the LGL spokeswoman on request.

Fewer corona intensive care patients thanks to the milder virus variant

According to the experts from Franconia, the fact that the corona situation is still relatively mild this summer has to do with the characteristic properties of this current Covid virus variant.

The "good news" is that there is currently no evidence that infection with the current variants leads to more severe disease progression than infection with other Omicron variants.

There is obviously no reason to celebrate prematurely.

Rather, the experts want to continue to monitor the situation in the hospitals closely.

In view of the currently slightly fluctuating development, there is currently no clear upward trend discernible.

"However, the occupancy of the normal wards with COVID-19 infected patients in Bavarian hospitals is still at a comparatively high level," says Martina Junk from the LGL in Erlangen.

A look at the current corona numbers in the "Rock-im-Park" city obviously confirms this assessment.

There are currently "only" just under ten corona patients in intensive care units in Nuremberg.

But around 150 patients are currently in normal wards with Corona in the Franconian metropolis.
