The Magistrate's Court in Kfar Saba opened today (Wednesday) the trial of Ilana Sporta from Ashkelon, who is accused of sending two threatening letters with a live bullet to members of Prime Minister Naftali Bennett's family.

For the hearing of the indictment, Sporta, who is staying in Neve Tirza, was brought up for discussion on video.

She requested that the following hearings also be in a video call and that she not be physically brought to court.

Her lawyer, Yaron Forer, said at the hearing: "The defendant was detained until the end of the proceedings and we intend to appeal it. We have a dispute over the offense attributed to her, an offense of extortion by threats. Threats should have been attributed to her but not extortion by threats."

The parties have announced that they will conduct contacts in the case and possibly also a mediation procedure.

The hearing has been adjourned to September, when an appeal will meanwhile be filed in the district court against the decision to extend Sporta's detention until the end of the proceedings.

Reminder: Sporta is charged with extortion by threatening Prime Minister Naftali Bennett and possession and carrying of weapons (ammunition).

Sporta is a political activist, often posting political publications on social media, and participating in political demonstrations and protests.

According to the indictment, she frequently posted on social media posts condemning Bennett, including swearing, blatant slander, harsh accusations, and death wishes and wishes.

The indictment states: "Against this background, at an unknown date, the defendant decided to make threats to the prime minister, to murder him, his wife, Gilat Bennett, and his son Yoni, if he did not resign.
