Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov affirmed that the Russian side is satisfied with the agreement on the five Caspian Sea states that was reached within the framework of the working group.
The Turkmen News Agency quoted Lavrov as saying yesterday in the Turkmen capital Ashgabat, "This agreement was approved at a meeting of foreign ministers of the Caspian Basin countries, which precedes the summit of the five Caspian states' heads of state."
According to Lavrov, the agreement will be presented today to the heads of Caspian Sea states at the Sixth Caspian Sea Summit, held in Turkmenistan.
Lavrov noted that the importance and sanctity of the principles of the Caspian Legal Status Agreement, which states that only the states located on the Caspian Sea have sovereign rights in relation to the sea and its resources, was emphasized, noting that the relevant parties reiterated the principles of the agreement in other areas and agreed to continue work. To strengthen and expand the legal framework for cooperation in the region.
This morning, the Caspian Sea Summit began in Ashgabat, with the attendance of the presidents of Russia, Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, Iran and Azerbaijan.
