The second main route in Munich should go into operation as early as 2026.

But the first trains will probably only run much later.

In addition, the costs are exploding.

Munich – Bavaria's largest transport project will probably be more expensive by well over a billion euros.

A crisis summit is scheduled for Thursday in the State Chancellery to discuss dramatic additional costs and delays in the ongoing construction of the second trunk line.

According to information from our newspaper, additional costs of around 1.5 billion euros are to be expected, and completion by no means before 2034.

Second regular route in Munich: 1.2 billion more and another six years on

According to the official reading, the main route should be finished in 2028, according to earlier calculations even in 2026. The last cost estimate was 3.8 billion euros, including a risk buffer.

Now the 5 billion would have an impact, and that would go far, our newspaper learned from those involved.

"It is completely unclear who will bear the additional costs," it said before the crisis summit, which lasted several hours.

The city and the Free State primarily see the federal government as responsible because the federal railways are entrusted with the planning.

Federal Transport Minister Volker Wissing (FDP) is expected in Munich.

Prime Minister Markus Söder and his Minister of Transport Christian Bernreiter (CSU) are taking part from the state government.

Mayor Katrin Habenschaden (Greens) has been announced by the city.

Munich: Construction of the second trunk line is in progress

The construction of the second trunk line has already begun in the west near Laim and at Marienhof.

For the east section, on the other hand, there is not even a building permit.

In addition, there are replannings for the subway network, such as the planned U9 between the main station and Münchner Freiheit.

For this route, a station in the shell state is to be included in the main route planning.
