Munich gastro institution is renamed after 150 years - "So many memories are attached to it"

The Café Altschwabing is an institution on the Schellingstrasse – for 150 years.
Now the traditional name is disappearing - the previous operator wants to break new ground.
Munich - What great ideas and thoughts may have arisen in this café?
Literary figures such as Thomas Mann or Joachim Ringelnatz, painters such as Paul Klee and Wassily Kandinsky and even the later revolutionary Vladimir Ilyich Lenin – they are all said to have stopped off at Café Altschwabing.

The historically magnificent stucco ceiling in the café on Schellingstrasse is a reminder of the coffee house flair of the Schwabing bohemians.

The ceiling will also stay - otherwise the Café Altschwabing is history as of today!
Operator Aslan Celik (40) wants to break new ground with the café: new name, new design, new concept.
Even the chandeliers that dangle so majestically from the stucco ceiling are coming off.
From August, the café will become the Mozzamo restaurant – a combination of the Italian words mozzarella and amo, meaning love.
A restaurant for Italian dishes and specialties.
Celik already operates three restaurants under this name in Munich.
"It was just the right time to implement this concept everywhere," says Celik.
After all, the catering industry has also become more fast-moving overall in recent years and has to constantly adapt to new developments.

Celik does not want to reveal exactly what it will look like.
However, the design will be based on the other Mozzamo restaurants.
Everything just a bit more modern.
However, the decision was not easy for Celik: "There are so many memories attached to it, so much passion." Being able to run such a traditional café still makes him proud.

The house on Schellingstraße, where the café moved shortly afterwards, was built as early as 1887.
Bombs destroyed the upper floors during the Second World War, but the café and stucco ceiling were spared.
Around 20 years ago, the ceiling was extensively restored.
Shortly thereafter, Celik's family took over the café.

Since then, in addition to coffee and cake, there have also been Turkish specialties.
These lined up on the menu alongside the many great minds who once graced the café: until recently, there were still breakfasts with the names Ringelnatz, Paul Klee and Franz Marc.
In the future, they will give way to pizza margherita and co. from the wood-fired oven.
It's probably the changing times.
