No breakthrough in Qatar: US-Iran talks end | Israel Today

2022-06-29T16:32:51.152Z

The talks, which began on Tuesday with the mediation of the European Union, were intended to whitewash the side issues that are hindering the completion of the official talks in Vienna on the renewal of the nuclear agreement.

An Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman announced today that the first round of talks between the United States and Iran in Qatar by European mediation has come to an end, thus confirming the earlier reports this morning of the end of the talks.

He denied the report by the Revolutionary Guards' Tasnim network that the talks ended unplanned and that there was an explosion around the US desire "for him from Iran economic benefits".

As you may recall, the talks are not part of the Vienna nuclear talks but are related to the issue of Iranian demands that are delaying the completion of the agreement (such as removing the Revolutionary Guards from the list of terrorist organizations).

According to the spokesman, it was expected from the outset that the current round would end on Wednesday, adding that the reporting of "Tasnim" was inaccurate as more meetings were expected as part of the talks on Wednesday.

According to the same report, the talks ended in an explosion due to the US refusal to provide economic guarantees to Iran.

Last weekend, EU foreign policy and security coordinator Joseph Burrell arrived in Tehran and later said he had received the parties' consent to mediate between them and said talks would take place "in a Gulf country."

These special talks in Qatar come amid disagreements between Washington and Tehran over the future of the Revolutionary Guards, which were added to the list of terrorist organizations during the presidency of Donald Trump.

Excluding the organization from the list has recently become a major demand of Iran, and it conditioned the completion of talks on the Vienna nuclear deal on that condition, even though the original nuclear deal did not address the issue at all.

The wording of the renewed nuclear deal is already ready, so it seems that this is the only issue at stake, but the Biden administration has made it clear that it will not be willing to remove the Revolutionary Guards in its entirety.
