The federal government has decided to raise pensions.

Some pensioners are also entitled to the basic pension.

An overview.

Frankfurt – The consequences of the Ukraine war, the corona pandemic and inflation are becoming increasingly noticeable.

The rising food, electricity, gas and fuel prices make it difficult for many.

It is also getting tighter and tighter for people who draw a pension.

According to a Spiegel survey, six out of ten people in Germany are already reducing their spending.

For some seniors, however, the year 2022 could also have good news in store.

Because the basic pension goes into the second round.

Together with a pension increase, it means financial help in difficult times.

Everything worth knowing at a glance.

First and foremost, senior citizens can look forward to a significant pension increase in July 2022.

Then the payments in western Germany will increase by 5.35 percent and in the east of the country even 6.12 percent are planned.

This is significantly higher than previously announced.

In 2021, Federal Labor Minister Hubertus Heil (SPD) spoke of 4.4 percent.

But the pension increase has already met with criticism.

The German trade union federation complained that the increase due to the so-called catch-up factor was lower.

And Union parliamentary group leader Sepp Müller (CDU) has already warned that inflation could nullify the increase.

Such an increase might not be enough, especially for people who only draw a small pension.

In order to help them, the federal government started the basic pension on July 1, 2021.

Pension 2022: when will the basic pension be paid out?

“Until the end of 2021, in addition to the entitlements of retirees who are about to retire, the entitlements of those who receive social benefits such as housing benefit or basic security in old age were primarily examined.

Pensions that started before 1992 were also checked.

Since February 2022, the entitlement check for existing pensions has been carried out with pensions beginning in 1992. By the end of 2022, all pensions will then have been called up for examination.

Here, too, the oldest years are checked first,” emphasizes the German pension insurance.

This means that not all existing pensions have been recorded and assessed.

Some pensioners will therefore have to be patient.

An application does not have to be submitted, the check is carried out automatically.

Pension 2022 changes: who is entitled to the basic pension?

Pensioners are entitled if they have at least 33 years

of basic pension

entitlement .

However, the full rate is only available if there are at least 35 years, according to the German pension insurance.

But what is meant by basic pension periods?

The German pension insurance lists the following aspects:

  • Mandatory contribution times from self-employment or employment

  • Compulsory contribution times for care and child rearing

  • Periods of sickness or rehabilitation benefits

  • Consideration times due to child rearing and care

  • Replacement times are also taken into account (e.g. times of military service, prisoner of war or political imprisonment in the GDR)

It is not included in the basic pension periods if contributions were paid voluntarily or if a person was unemployed and received Hartz IV, for example.

The level of income during working life also plays a role in the basic pension period.

If an employee's earnings are less than 30 percent of the average earnings in Germany, this does not count towards the basic pension period.

The upper limit is that periods are not included when average earnings were more than 80 percent above the German average.

Basic pension 2022: Which pension is there an entitlement to the supplement?

In addition to the basic pension periods, the amount of the pension and the level of

income

are also relevant.

For example, single pensioners only receive the full amount of the basic pension if their monthly income is less than 1250 euros.

In contrast, couples may not exceed an income of 1950 euros.

“If the income is above that, 60 percent of the basic pension supplement is counted.

From a monthly income of 1600 euros or 2300 euros for married couples, it is counted at 100 percent”, according to the German pension insurance.

The pension supplement can help pensioners to make ends meet better.

But critics are already emphasizing that the basic pension, at around EUR 418 (the maximum amount), is far too low.

An experiment showed that even the increased pension is often not enough for a retirement away from financial hardship.
