A revolutionary intervention to treat atrial fibrillation was performed at the Mauritian hospital in Turin, to reduce the risk of stroke.
A 56-year-old patient underwent an operation that combined two techniques for the first time in the world: an ablation (the cancellation of abnormal electrical pathways) of both traditional atrial fibrillation and through the outer, epicardial surface of the heart, using a non-surgical minimally invasive approach, associated with an external epicardial, but non-surgical ligation of the left auricle (hollow extension of the atrium).
