US Constitutional Court Judge Stephen Breyer is resigning from the Supreme Court on Thursday.
The lawyer, who is considered a liberal, is retiring after 28 years of service on the country's Supreme Court.
"It has been my honor to serve as a judge in efforts to uphold our Constitution and the rule of law," Breyer said in a letter to US President Joe Biden.
Breyer, 83, will be succeeded by Ketanji Brown Jackson, the first black woman to hold the post.
US President Biden nominated Jackson.
The Senate confirmed her as the new constitutional judge with a narrow majority of 53 to 47 votes.
Nothing changes in the majorities at the powerful court.
A majority of six of the nine constitutional judges belong to the conservative camp.
