Iran's representative to the United Nations, Majid Takht Ravanchi, criticized some governments for repeatedly using the powers and responsibilities of the UN Security Council to advance their own goals.

During a meeting of the UN Security Council held yesterday on reforming the council and improving its working methods, Takht Ravanchi stressed the need to increase the efficiency and effectiveness of the Security Council in light of the changing nature and scope of challenges related to international peace and security. This will also help the Council to prevent the abuse or overuse of the measures set out in Chapter VII of the Charter.”

Takht Ravanchi stressed that reforming and transforming the council into a fully transparent institution governed by the rule of law and subject to accountability is the most effective way to ensure its transparency, effectiveness and impact, pointing out the importance of pluralism in resolving international crises and challenges.

Takht Ravanchi referred to the Security Council's annual reports to the General Assembly, which should contribute to the necessary transparency and accountability of decisions and actions taken by the Security Council.

Referring to the humanitarian consequences of sanctions on states, Takht Ravanchi said: "The Security Council should evaluate the effectiveness of sanctions and their human consequences in various stages of the conflict, and if necessary, suspend or cancel them, because sanctions on states have serious humanitarian consequences."
