– The Freising city coat of arms with the Corbinian bear comes in its current form from the 1970s.
The city council has long been in agreement that this variant is no longer up-to-date.
However, since 2017 there have been controversial discussions about what a modern version and thus also the future corporate design of Freising should look like.
That's why it was decided to commission the studio for font and brand design "Just your Type" with the development of a coat of arms and the corporate design.
At the end of 2020, the Council of Elders decided to commission the Freising agency.
An internal administration working group was formed, the parliamentary group leaders were involved, and the result was presented internally in May 2022.
On Monday, the first public presentation of the new and modern Corbinian bear and the city coat of arms took place in the finance committee.
The following specifications and suggestions had to be observed: The coat of arms should be "more robust" and have a black line as a demarcation, the colors should be stronger, there should be fewer layout and logo variants, the font should be "open source", in other words: cost nothing.
Because the bear appeared "too cuddly" and "too snooty" in the version available up to that point, it was made "more mature", according to the representatives of "Just Your Type".
In addition, it has become "edgier", symbolizes departure, lightness and success, the coat of arms contains more Bavarian lozenges than in the original variant, the colors are "less pastel", the font is friendly and dynamic, "clear, reduced and legible".
Of course, all of this is also available in a black and white version.
There were no statements or assessments of the draft from the ranks of the city councilors on Monday; the city council was unanimously recommended to approve these drafts and the new corporate design.
However, Susanne Günther (Greens) wanted to know what the schedule looks like and when implementation can be expected.
After all, it's not just about the stationery, but about signage, the stickers on vehicles, and and and.
The head of the main office, Rupert Widmann, replied that the city council decision was needed first, then a new handbook – also known as a “manual” or “guideline” – would be drawn up and the new corporate design would then be successively and step by step transferred to the “thousands of possible applications”.
There is a "deadline" by which everything must have happened: the year 2024, when the 1300th anniversary of the arrival of Saint Corbinian in Freising is celebrated.
