The Hennigbach is being extensively renatured

A renatured Hennigbach is part of a large-scale flood concept for Markt Schwaben.

After a long period of preparation, the work is now beginning.

Markt Schwaben – If you listen closely, you can hear a Hennigbach rippling gently in the heart of the market town these days.

For example at Bahnhofstrasse, a stone's throw away in the direction of the workers' welfare home for the elderly;

so in the Angerl.

In a few days, however, there will no longer be any talk of this almost idyllic tranquillity.

A long-discussed major renaturation of the Hennigbach between Postanger and Heilmaierbrücke is imminent.

After all, this is a measure that will last until the beginning of 2024 according to the current schedule.

The official starting signal is already next Monday, July 4th.

Two new bridges and a jetty will be built

The ecological rehabilitation of the inner-city creek is, according to Uwe Müller, a clerk in the municipal building office, part of a larger flood measure, which, in addition to the interventions in the Hennigbach creek bed, also includes the major measures in the Einbergfeld direction Anzing as well as on the Gigginger creek and in the Roßacker area belong.

Only all of the measures in combination represented the flood protection that experts considered useful for the market community, according to the building authority employee.

According to Müller, two new bridges in particular (Im Angerl and Nagelschmiedgasse) and a footbridge at the allotment garden on the Hennigbach will be built in the aforementioned section of the stream in the next few months.

In addition, the Hennigbach will gradually get a new bank reinforcement on both sides in the section mentioned.

A radical exchange will take place, particularly where so-called U-profiles were once created, the clerk told the Ebersberger Zeitung.

His reasoning is that the concrete U-profiles are in danger of collapsing in places.

Since they have also been rehabilitated many times in the past, the creek bed has gradually narrowed.

Measures should increase the flow

The upcoming interventions also serve to improve the flow.

The goal is to model the Hennigbach in such a way that up to eleven cubic meters of water per second can easily flow through the stream bed without having to create bottlenecks under the bridges.

It is therefore planned that a freeboard of 50 centimeters will remain under the bridges.

This entire measure is based on calculations that were made in the course of creating an overall flood concept for Markt Schwaben, says Müller.

Attempts are also being made in places to give the stream opportunities to meander again.

By using so-called armor stones, an attempt is made to give the flowing water something like a trace of naturalness back.

According to Müller, the declared intention is to significantly improve the quality of stay at the Hennigbach and to increase the "experience" in addition to the flood exposure.

If everything goes as planned, there should even be areas where you can even walk right up to the water.

Something that hasn't been possible for decades.

Work begins next Monday

Next Monday, July 4th, the first construction site areas will be set up.

It starts in the area of ​​the street "Im Angerl", where an existing pedestrian stairway will also be converted to make it handicapped accessible.

According to Müller, the bridge in the Angerl will be almost completely closed during the renovation phase, with temporary closures in Nagelschmiedgasse to be expected.

The building authority of the market community expects traffic obstructions in particular in the Seifensiedergasse and in the Heilmaierstraße.
