(CNN Spanish) --

The head of the Unitary Platform, Venezuela's opposition delegation for the negotiation in Mexico, Gerardo Blyde, confirmed on Tuesday that the coalition held a meeting with the delegation of the United States Government that is in Venezuela "to coordinate efforts in order to restore the negotiation process”.

In this sense, in a statement published on their Twitter account, it is highlighted that the Unitary Platform is "ready to immediately resume a serious negotiation process under the memorandum of understanding signed in Mexico", which, they insist, "has as its objective put an end to the suffering of Venezuelans and achieve change through the most powerful instrument that the citizen has, the vote”.

The negotiation process in Mexico has been on pause since October, when the delegation of the questioned government of Nicolás Maduro decided to leave the table after the extradition to the United States of Alex Saab, a Colombian businessman detained in Cape Verde and singled out by countries such as Colombia and United States of being the figurehead of Maduro.

Saab has pleaded not guilty and his defense assures that his arrest is illegal, since he affirms that this citizen with dual nationality is a Venezuelan diplomatic official.

In mid-May, two senior officials in the Joe Biden administration told CNN that they would begin easing some energy sanctions against Venezuela to favor political discussions between President Nicolás Maduro and the opposition.

They clarified that these measures would be tied to the progress or setbacks achieved at said negotiating table.

As Maduro himself announced on Monday, Jorge Rodríguez, head of the official delegation for the negotiation in Mexico, met that same day with Washington's envoys.
