UN calls for safe migration routes after tragedy in Mexico

After the death of around 50 people who were illegally smuggled into the USA in a truck, UN organizations are insisting on an investigation. They appealed to all countries to combat the causes of flight.

Several people were discovered in a truck north of the Mexican border on Monday, abandoned by smugglers in the heat.

The United Nations are now demanding consequences: people smugglers must be stopped, the Organization for Migration (IOM) and the United Nations refugee agency (UNHCR) demanded on Wednesday in Geneva.

IOM and UNHCR called on all countries to establish safe migration routes and address the root causes that drive people to flee.

About 66 people were discovered on Monday in the sweltering heat of a parked truck in the US state of Texas, apparently without water or air conditioning.

The trailer was about 250 kilometers north of the Mexican border near the city of San Antonio.

16 people, including four minors, were recovering from heat, exhaustion and dehydration in hospitals, according to media reports on Tuesday.

At least 46 people died in the trailer, according to the fire department.

Among those fleeing are typically asylum-seekers who face persecution at home and human rights abuses, said UNHCR representative in the region Matthew Reynolds.

Each individual case must be examined.

"We mourn with the families at the loss of their loved ones and call on authorities on both sides of the border to vigorously investigate and hold accountable those who contributed to the horrific incident through their heartless contempt for human life," she said responsible IOM Regional Director Michele Klein-Solomon.

Since 2014, around 3,000 people have died or disappeared trying to cross the Mexico-US border.

In the first six months of this year, 290 people died.

In 2017, ten dead migrants were discovered in the back of a truck in San Antonio.
