Flood protection on the Amper is a permanent topic in Dachau.

Now the water management office has completed its planning.

Dachau – In terms of flood protection in front of the Amper in the Holzgarten, something is happening: because the responsible water management office in Munich has largely completed its preliminary planning, the topic will come up on Tuesday, July 5th at 2:30 p.m. in the public meeting of the environmental and transport committee of the city of Dachau to the language.

And this in turn invites you on Monday, July 18, at 7 p.m., to the public dialogue in the Ludwig-Thoma-Haus.

In the case of the citizens' initiative "Flood Protection Ascherbach Holzgarten", there is joy about the meeting and dialogue on the one hand, but on the other hand those responsible express criticism.

Specifically, the aim is to better protect the parts of Dachau (Holzgartensiedlung, Im Lus) that are particularly at risk in the event of a flood in the Amper.

The aim of the water management office was to develop different variants in order to then be able to compare and evaluate them, according to the city in a press release.

"As with other important projects in our city, we of course also sought early dialogue with the citizens on this flood protection," says Mayor Florian Hartmann.

In order to keep the process transparent, he invites the affected residents and interested citizens to the public meeting of the environment and transport committee in the Dachau town hall on July 5: Here, representatives of the water management office present their preliminary plans and the evaluation of the individual variants for the first time to the City Council and the public.

"In a next step, we want to sit down again with the affected residents to communicate and discuss the facts," Hartmann continued.

The date for this public dialogue in the Ludwig-Thoma-Haus is July 18th.

Only with the knowledge gained at this public event should the city councilors in the environment and transport committee decide on the preferred variant on Wednesday, September 14th, with which the further approval procedure will be initiated;

this meeting from 2.30 p.m. is also open to the public.

"We think it's very good of Mayor Hartmann that we talk about things before the summer break," says Dr.

Yvonne Schneider, spokeswoman for the citizens' initiative "Flood Protection Ascherbach Holzgarten".

The BI also welcomes the fact that the preferred variant is to be decided in September, against which one can still appeal if necessary.

"What we are critical of," says Schneider, "is that the water management office has never made the reports available to us, despite our request." Above all, the expertise on groundwater is of great importance here, because the citizens are opposed to the variant, as reported "Holzgarten", a dam variant that would deliberately direct the flood water very close to the residential areas on the outskirts of the city in order to have the largest possible retention area, i.e. an area that can be used as a floodplain in the event of a flood.

In the case of this dam variant, "the flow of groundwater is disturbed throughout the district," says Schneider.

City advises installing warning apps

The flood disasters in Rhineland-Palatinate, North Rhine-Westphalia and Berchtesgadener Land last year showed how quickly small rivers can turn into torrents with extremely destructive effects during heavy rain.

Although Dachau is significantly less at risk than the areas affected by the 2021 flood, flooding can also occur in Dachau with its Amper and Würm rivers and the many streams and canals.

That is why the city of Dachau advises citizens to install the warning apps Nina or Katwarn.

The Dachau volunteer fire brigade uses these apps to communicate warnings in cooperation with the district office.

This applies not only to the threat of flooding, but also to other dangerous situations such as storms, fires and accidents involving dangerous goods.

So far, the three variants "Im Holzgarten", "Alte Liebe" and "Im Lus" have been under discussion.

According to Schneider, after the city spoke of "different" variants in its statement, it could be that another suggestion would be added to which the BI would first have to adapt.

"It would be very interesting to know what the preferred variant is," said the spokeswoman.

The city also reports that the Munich Water Management Office has based its plans on the assumption of a so-called hundred-year flood - i.e. a flood event that occurs mathematically once in a hundred years.

In the event of such a flood, the Amper would overflow on the right south of Günding and flood the plain.

The buildings in the Lus south of Mitterndorf, the Alte Liebe restaurant and areas in the wood garden would be affected.

"This must be avoided with effective and environmentally friendly flood protection measures at the same time - the aim of the planning is to build a dam that creates additional retention area and directs the water back into the Amper before it reaches the city," says the press release.
