Take care of midsummer bonfire and straw bale pool.

Alfred Böhm, outgoing board member of the Vaterstetten fire department, speaks of the possible end of the traditional celebration.

Vaterstetten – "It's going to be a grave for millions," says Alfred Böhm, outgoing director of the Vaterstetten fire brigade.

He talks about the planned public park, the financial resources required for implementation and the possible end of the traditional midsummer bonfire, organized by the local fire department for many years.

An offer gladly accepted by the population, a major event in town.

Actually, it was the evening to say thank you.

Alfred Böhm's last report after 32 years as head of the fire brigade (we reported).

But no sign of retirement.

In his report, Böhm listed the possible activities of the military despite the restrictions in the corona pandemic, including those outside of emergency operations.

All voluntary.

Midsummer fire: New space was needed due to the new school building

But then the worry about the midsummer fire.

This had taken place many years before the youth center.

Because of the new building of the school on the site, a new place had to be found.

Opposite, following the municipal cemetery, there was one.

As a farmer, Böhm was also able to set the fire on a field.

Families are now also using the open space.

There are new plans for the area.

In an intensive debate, the municipal council decided to develop a public park on the property.

The original concept has been shortened.

However, it was decided, among other things, to create a terracing in a central area of the site, to create an amphitheater-like depression with a difference in height of a few meters.

There will probably no longer be a straw bale pool

However, this actually makes a midsummer bonfire impossible, according to the fire department.

Because the necessary wood cannot be delivered there by vehicle, nor can the leftovers be cleaned up afterwards.

The straw bale pool previously organized by the local JU (youth organization of the CSU) will probably no longer exist on the redesigned site.

According to Böhm, the area was previously intended for an expansion of the cemetery.

Around 200,000 euros were initially planned for the new Bürgerpark, but now there is talk of 500,000 euros.

Future maintenance also very expensive because of planted trees

The future maintenance of the park will also be very expensive because of the additional trees planted, in other words a "grave of millions".

"Why do you always have to make such outrageously expensive solutions when there is a cheaper way?" Mayor Leonhard Spitzauer (CSU) spoke in his welcoming address at the fire brigade meeting in relation to the debate in the municipal council of a "theater".
