(S+) Stronger NATO: Why Putin miscalculated

2022-06-30T04:08:56.346Z

Deterrence and defense instead of rapprochement – NATO has now officially changed its strategy when dealing with Russia. What role does Germany play in this?

More soldiers, more guns, more money for defense.

At the first regular NATO summit since Russia attacked Ukraine, the allies agreed to increase the rapid deployment force from 40,000 to more than 300,000.

NATO is thus arming itself for the growing threat from Russia.

In addition, Sweden and Finland are to be accepted as new members.

Chancellor Olaf Scholz promised in Madrid that Germany would get more involved.

For example, German soldiers are to be stationed in the Baltic States.

But it is unclear how quickly this will happen.

"Everyone is looking at Germany and asking if what Scholz announced is actually happening," reports SPIEGEL correspondent Ralf Neukirch from the meeting in Madrid.

In the SPIEGEL Daily Podcast he explains why it is becoming difficult for Germany to keep the promises.
