“
Nearly 16 million people in Ukraine today need humanitarian aid: water, food, health services
,” Osnat Lubrani told a press conference, as the war unleashed by Russia entered its fifth month.
“
More than six million people are still internally displaced.
Some five million people have now managed to return home, but many know they may be forced to flee again
,” she continued.
According to the International Organization for Migration, which is part of the UN system, this return figure concerns both internally displaced persons and those who have returned from abroad.
Still according to Osnat Lubrani, more than 5.3 million Ukrainians have taken refuge abroad.
“
What we do know is that the number we have of nearly 5,000 civilians killed and over 5,000 injured is only a fraction of the chilling reality
,” she acknowledged.
“
I can't speak to specific numbers of damaged hospitals, schools and homes, but we know they number in the thousands.
We just can't verify the exact numbers yet
,” she said.
