A 20-year-old mother was shot in the head while pushing her 3-month-old baby's stroller in New York

A 20-year-old mother was shot to death Wednesday in New York City's Upper East Side neighborhood as she pushed her 3-month-old baby's stroller down the street.

The killer remains uncaught, NBC New York reported.

The girl's mother, Azsia Johnson, told Fox News that the suspect is the baby's father.

"The city was supposed to protect her," Lisa Desort said, "it's a domestic violence case from January."

"Nobody protected my daughter, and now she is dead," she said between tears.

"He threatened me with death, my daughter with death and my other daughter with death," she said.

"We called the police station many times," she added.

The young mother, whose identity has not been released, was pushing her cart near Lexington Avenue and 95th Street around 8:30 p.m. when a man wearing a black hooded sweatshirt

and fled on foot, police told NBC News.

The woman was found unconscious and taken to Hospital Metropolitano in critical condition, where she was pronounced dead.

The baby was not injured

but authorities did not provide further details.

Police are looking for the father, whom they consider to be a person of interest in the crime investigation, according to Fox News.

Desort said her daughter had been working since she was 16 and taking care of people.

"She was the best mother," she said, "my daughter didn't deserve this."

The mayor of New York, Eric Adam, lamented and condemned what happened.

“More guns in our city means more lives lost.

It means more babies crying while those who love them lie dead.

We cannot allow this epidemic to continue claiming lives, ”he said on the social network Twitter.

This crime comes less than a week after the Supreme Court struck down a New York law that restricted firearms to those without "just cause."

The New York legislature will meet this Thursday in a special session to address the consequences of the court ruling.

“We have addressed the issue of the excessive proliferation of firearms on our streets, how readily accessible they are, and the fact that there is no fear in using these weapons against innocent New Yorkers,” Adams said.

“This is the result of that,” she added.
