European scientists have discovered a rare and unknown species of the pitcher plant that lives on the island of Borneo in the Indonesian province of North Kalimantan.
The Sky News channel quoted the scientists as saying that the new strain was monitored in a mountainous area at an altitude of about 1100 to 1300 meters above sea level.
The scientists indicated that the pitcher plant is a type of insect-eating plant, often climbing, and its leaves are mutated in the form of a pitcher or jar, inside which there is a liquid containing digestive enzymes, and it has a permanent wax cover that performs two tasks, the first is to protect the pitcher from rainwater and the second is to attract insects to the nectar glands. The discoverer is different from its carnivorous counterparts in terms of its different traps.
The botanist from the University of Palasko Olomouc in the Czech Republic, Martin Danak, explained that this new species of the pitcher plant puts its pitcher-like traps and reaches a length of 11 cm underground, and also hunts insects such as ants, moths and beetles, pointing out that the high altitude can be the main reason Behind this plant's tendency is partly to grow underground.
