The suspect in the murder of an elite cyclist in Texas was captured in Costa Rica this Wednesday and will be extradited to the United States to be charged with a crime that sparked national interest.

Kaitlin Marie Armstrong, 34, allegedly shot Anna Moriah Wilson in June in Austin, according to the Marshals Service.

A joint task force of U.S. Marshals and Department of Homeland Security investigators discovered that Armstrong boarded a United Airlines flight in New Jersey using a false passport and arrived in Costa Rica on May 18, a week after the incident. Wilson's death and a day after a warrant for his arrest was issued.

“The US Marshals Service upgraded the investigation to a lead case early in the investigation, which likely played a key role in his capture after a 43-day manhunt,” said Susan Pamerleau, Sheriff for the Western District of Texas.

Wilson, 25, was a mountain biker;

he won several races earlier this year and gave up his job at a bike company to pursue racing full time.

She was the favorite for the May 14 Gravel Locos race in Hico shortly before her death.

Armstrong and Wilson had been romantically involved with the same man before Wilson was found shot multiple times in an Austin home on May 11, according to police.

Armstrong was in a relationship with professional cyclist Colin Strickland

for about three years before the couple split, according to an arrest affidavit from May.

During that time, Strickland and Wilson began seeing each other.

Strickland has not been charged with any crime in the case.

Strickland told the Austin-American Statesman in June that he and Wilson had a brief romantic relationship from late October to early November while Wilson was visiting Austin.

The two had recently ended other relationships, Strickland said.

The man and Armstrong reconciled a month later, according to the investigation.

An unidentified friend said she was with Armstrong in January when she found out about Strickland and Wilson's relationship, according to the affidavit.

The friend said Armstrong "became furious and was shaking with rage."

Investigators announced last week that Armstrong's black Jeep Grand Cherokee had been located in Austin, discovering that

she had sold the vehicle for more than $12,000 two days after Wilson's death.

On May 14, days after being questioned by police, she flew from Austin to Houston, then took a flight to New York's LaGuardia Airport, sheriffs said Thursday.

On May 18, she was dropped off at New Jersey's Newark International Airport, where she flew to San José, Costa Rica, according to the investigation.

A warrant for Armstrong's arrest for manslaughter was issued that same day, and later, on May 25, a federal warrant for flight to avoid prosecution was issued.
