Short and violent: So late Thursday afternoon there was a hailstorm that erupted in the southern district of Garmisch-Partenkirchen.
The damage caused is likely to be significant.
Some of the grains were as big as table tennis balls.
Pedestrians fled to safety.
Motorists stopped or sought shelter under trees to avoid fender bender.
Nevertheless, dents appeared on many vehicles that were parked outdoors.
There must have been major damage in the Ammer Valley and especially in Oberau.
Witnesses report that a number of car windows and even window panes were broken.
There may have been a number of insurance claims.
After about a quarter of an hour the spook was over.
