The bill sets a minimum of one-fifth of the maximum penalty for the offense of helpless abuse • MK Ofir Katz: "After a difficult three-year war, we took a historic step today in protecting the children of all of us. Every abuser will sit in jail."

After too many cases of abuse in kindergartens:

A bill by MK Ophir Katz of the Likud, which tightens the punishment for abusers, passed today (Thursday) in the Knesset.

The bill sets a minimum of one-fifth of the maximum penalty for the helpless abuse offense which stands at nine years.

The proposal means that anyone convicted in this section will be sentenced to a minimum of 22 months' actual imprisonment.

The bill was born out of a long line of mitigating judgments in severe cases of violence against toddlers, which created a lack of deterrence and proportionality.

In recent years there has been a sharp increase in the number of cases of abuse in kindergartens.

According to police data, in the last year alone, there has been a 400% increase in these cases.

The law will lead to significant progress in eradicating the phenomenon and maintaining the safety of children.

Together with parents we fought and brought real change against all odds, offices and authorities. I pledge to continue to shout the cries of the children and parents and fight for them. "

Alona Daniel, the headquarters of the fight against early childhood abuse, added: "We were privileged to reach the moment we strived for three years.
