Dr. Wael Barakat, in his new book, “Kamal Khair Bey..a poet who draws the features of renaissance and modernity,” describes the intellectual and cultural movement of the poet Khair Bey and his poetic emergence with the conceptions of the new Arab modernity and its beginnings and his arrival to the rank of Knights of Modernity with Badr Shaker Al-Sayyab, Nazik Al-Malaika and Abdul Wahab Al-Bayati.
Barakat points out that Khair Bey spent his life confronting his archenemy, reactionary and the occupation with extreme ferocity, but the hand of ignorance rushed him with a treacherous bullet because of his stances against the occupation, so he died as a martyr.
In the book issued by the Syrian General Book Authority, Barakat shows that Khair Bey did not take his right within the Arab reading forums, and his fierce war against ignorance and backwardness and his enthusiasm for liberation and independence did not mean that he was present among the contemporary Knights of the Renaissance, whose main concern was building modern societies.
The book, which is located in 464 pages of medium size, mentioned three themes that studied the poet’s struggle against Zionism, the construction of his poetry, his modernity, his collections, and his involvement in the poetic modernity movement, in addition to critical readings of a number of writers and critics, and testimonies in his life and poetry from thinkers, media professionals and researchers.
Barakat is keen on the existence of critical research and applied methodology, the compatibility of evidence with ideas, and navigating the important joints of the poet's life.
It is noteworthy that Wael Barakat is a doctor of literature and criticism and professor of critical trends, international literature and aesthetic studies at the University of Damascus. He has many books, including “An Introduction to Critical Curricula and Trends in Modern and Contemporary Criticism” and “An Introduction to Literature Neighborhoods.”
