The Lichtkunst association is planning so-called "Open House events" in loose succession up to the festival in order to provide information about everything to do with the 3rd Light Art Festival in Weilheim.

The first such meeting took place recently.

– As part of the event, the association's chairwoman, Ragnhild Thieler, and some of her colleagues were able to present the first artist of this year's festival, which will take place on October 14th and 15th.

Philip Schambelan from the "Armaments Forge" was in Weilheim for a preview and on this occasion gave an insight into the working methods of the artist collective, which wants to use its name to refer to the financial discrepancy between the armaments industry and culture.

Light Art Festival Weilheim: “Armor Forge” from Dresden

“Armourers” are Philip Schambelan and Michal Banisch from Dresden.

They are both architects and met each other during their studies.

The fascination for architecture brought her to light art.

"The content of our installations is based on 3D and geo-data," explains Schambelan.

From this collection, which also includes your own impressions from visiting the building, the first idea emerges.

Then everything alternates between light art and sound, like in ping-pong.

"We get the first sound sketch, then we continue to work, the sound is further developed on the basis of this and that's how it goes until the finale," he describes the mutual inspiration.

“Handpicked artists” come to Weilheim

With some videos at the open house event, which were shown in time-lapse mode, interested visitors were able to get to know the armorers' installations.

It also became clear how closely light and sound are connected in these mappings.

"If we're not allowed to turn on the sound during rehearsals, we're initially disappointed," says the light artist.

"But when we then see it at the event with sound, everything is fine again, just like before on the computer!"

As with the plans for a building, the light artists of the "armor forge" focus on the aesthetics and use color very sparingly, most of it is classic black and white.

Festival does not want to grow, but "remain authentic"

Philipp Geist, artistic director of the festival, raves about the authenticity of the "armour forge": "We have hand-picked artists at our festival.

We don't want to get bigger, we want to remain authentic.” In his eyes, Schambelan's and Banisch's work – now in demand across Europe and around the world – delivers precisely these authentic results, such as their work on the Ceausescu Palace in Bucharest, on the cathedral in Pécs, Hungary, or on show a boules hall in Lille, France.

Light Art Festival Weilheim: Philipp Geist cooperates with Chorkreis

True to their motto, they challenge the audience: "On your face - we want to shoot people with light!" At this year's third light art festival, in addition to the various installations in the city center, lectures and artist talks in the festival center in the city theater are also planned.

Curator Philipp Geist is still reluctant to come up with his own ideas for the festival.

He only reveals this much: “I have a project at Marienplatz in cooperation with the Weilheimer Chorkreis.

But more will not be revealed yet!”.
