The Knesset plenum today (Thursday) approved in second and third reading the bill of MK Ophir Katz from the Likud, which aims to increase the punishment for child abuse.
The bill sets a minimum sentence of two years in prison, a minimum of one-fifth of the maximum penalty for the offense of helpless abuse which stands at nine years.
The implication of the proposal is that anyone convicted in this section will be sentenced to a minimum sentence of actual imprisonment for a minimum of two years.
MK Katz initiated the bill following a long series of mitigating rulings in severe cases of violence against toddlers, which created a lack of deterrence and proportionality, and provoked harsh public criticism. Katz believes that the law will lead to significant progress in eradicating the phenomenon and maintaining the safety of children.

He said, "After a difficult war of three years we took a historic step today in protecting all of our children, every abuser will sit in jail. Together with the parents we fought and brought real change against all odds, offices and authorities that stood in the way. I am proud and excited to pass this important bill. I pledge to continue to cry out for the children and parents and fight for them
. Reach the moment we have been striving for for 3 years.
From a legal system that looked at us in bewilderment, to a legal system that recognizes the scourge of the state and enlists in the consent of a precedent-setting minimum punishment for child abusers.
From today, the injured toddlers will be entitled to justice.
We wholeheartedly thank MK Ofir Katz, who goes hand in hand with us and fights for the children. "
