The process has started.
The thirty member countries of the Atlantic Alliance have officially invited, after the lifting of the Turkish veto, Finland and Sweden to join NATO.
The two countries had filed their demands on May 18 as a result of the war in Ukraine, breaking with decades of neutrality.
To be able to be candidates for NATO, they first needed the consent of the Heads of State and Government.
This first key step was taken on Wednesday at the Alliance summit in Madrid, Spain.
The secretary general of the organization, Jens Stoltenberg, was delighted with the procedure,
“the fastest”
since the Alliance existed.
“Vladimir Putin succeeded in making states with a rather reserved attitude towards the Alliance decide to join it!”
, commented Emmanuel Macron, emphasizing
“the strategic message”
addressed to Russia.
