Angela Merkel is appearing in public again.

Now the ex-Chancellor is taking on a post in Portugal.

Berlin – Ex-Chancellor Angela Merkel is concretizing her plans for the future.

The CDU politician wants to chair the jury of the Portuguese Gulbenkian Prize for Humanity.

A spokeswoman for the former chancellor confirmed this to the dpa on Wednesday.

Angela Merkel has a new job: jury chair in Portugal

In all likelihood, Merkel will chair the jury in autumn - a year after the federal elections, after which the long-time head of government left politics and then only rarely appeared in public.

The presidency is associated with participation in this year's award ceremony.

Merkel had previously informed the federal government that she wanted to chair the jury.

A decision by the cabinet of June 15 was published in the Federal Gazette, according to which there are no objections to Merkel taking on this jury function.

The ministerial round followed the corresponding recommendation of an advisory body.

Merkel's new role: Greta Thunberg received the Gulbenkian Prize in 2020

The foundation of the same name, founded by the Armenian oil magnate and art collector Calouste Gulbenkian in Portugal in 1956, claims to aim to improve people's quality of life through art, charity, science and education.

In 2020, the foundation launched the Prize for Humanity.

Two years ago, Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg was the first to receive the award, which is worth one million euros.

Thunberg was honored for her fight against global warming and environmental degradation.

In 2021, the award went to the Global Covenant of Mayors organization.

The 2022 winner is to be announced in July.
