For its part, the Palestinian Red Crescent reported 64 Palestinians wounded during clashes in this place of tension revered by the Jews as sheltering the remains of Joseph, one of the twelve sons of the patriarch Jacob, but considered by the Palestinians as the grave of a local Muslim religious figure.

Last May, a 16-year-old Palestinian teenager, Ghaith Yamin, was killed by Israeli soldiers during clashes at this site visited by Jewish pilgrims under Israeli army escort in the West Bank, territory occupied since 1967 by the Hebrew state.
